Electrical Measurements Course Content And Text Books

Electrical Measurements:

Module-I (10 hours)

Indicating instruments: Principle, different types of control and damping arrangements in indicating instruments, Permanent Magnet Moving Coil (PMMC), Moving Iron (MI), electrostatic and dynamometer type meters, errors in indicating instruments, the extension of instrument range for ammeters and voltmeters. 

Module-II (8 hours)

Measuring instruments: Dynamometer type wattmeter, errors, and compensation, measurement of 1-phase power by 3 voltmeter and 3 ammeter methods, 3-phase power measurement by two wattmeter method, single phase energy meters, single phase induction type energy meter, errors, and compensation. Calibration of wattmeter and energy meter. Frequency meters: Mechanical and electrical resonance type. Power factor meters: Dynamometer type, Moving Iron (MI) type. 

Module-III (8 hours) 

Bridges: Measurement of resistance using Wheatstone bridge, Kelvin double bridge, and megger. Measurement of inductance using Maxwell’s bridge, Hay’s bridge, and Anderson’s bridge. Measurement of capacitance using Schering bridge. 

Module-IV (8 hours) 

Potentiometers: General principle, Vernier dial, the principle of standardization. AC potentiometers-Coordinate type and polar type, application of DC and AC potentiometers. 

Module-V (8 hours) 

Instrument transformers: Components and working of Current Transformer (C.T.), phasor diagram, ratio error, and phase angle error, testing. Components and working of Potential Transformer (P.T.), phasor diagram, ratio error, and phase angle error, testing.
